Smoke alarms always seem to start beeping at the most inconvenient times; like 3 a.m. Instead of waiting for that dreaded wake-up call, it's best to be proactive and replace the batteries once or twice a year. A common reminder is to change them during daylight savings time. If your smoke alarm starts beeping, the most likely issue is a low battery. Rather than disconnecting the alarm, which leaves you unprotected, simply replace the battery. Many smoke alarms have a small compartment on the side or bottom where the battery is housed. Open the compartment, remove the old 9-volt battery, and insert a new one, making sure to align it with the correct positive and negative terminals. After replacing it, press the test button to ensure the system is functioning properly; this may trigger alarms in other rooms temporarily. Once the system resets, your home is protected again, and the process takes just a minute
